MetalHeadRadio:
Thanks for sharing yourselves with us here at MHR & the Metal network. Introduce yourselves.....

Hemoptysis (HUh-moP-ti-sis)
Masaki Murashita, singer/guitarist
Jack Fliegler, guitarist
Sunao Arai, bassist
Travis Thune, Drummer

MetalHeadRadio:
Whats the origin of your band name?

Travis: We had a name for a while that we found was already taken by a band in France so we were looking for a new name. We were having a hard time finding one so I asked my wife who is a pharmacist who specializes in infectious diseases if she had any sick medical terms she could suggest and one was Hemoptysis. It was the coolest sounding name and it had the coolest, most metal sounding definition: coughing up blood.

MetalHeadRadio:
How long have you all known each other?
How did you meet?

Masaki: Sunao was my first friend in Arizona. I moved to Phoenix from Seattle in December 2006 and he was in a different band at that time. I met Travis through our mutual friend around March 2007 while Travis was practicing drums by himself. I brought my gear and we jammed together.
A few months later, late May or early June, I called Travis and we started jamming with the other guitarist we used to have. That's how we started. We had a hard time finding a bassist and Travis pursuaded Sunao to join with us around February 2008, several months after Sunao left his previous band.

Sunao: I've known Masaki since he moved here, and met Travis at the practice space where my former band used back then.

Travis: We went through a couple lead guitarists and found Jack after we recorded our EP.

Jack: I just met these guys in August of '08.

MetalHeadRadio:
When did you form your band?
What inspired you to make music together?

Masaki: Travis and I officially started playing together in June 2007. Since then, we went through some member changes and ended up with the current line up.

Travis: Masaki and I just clicked. We both have a strong base in thrash metal even though we are also influenced by other genres too. He had riffs and songs that were very easy for me to get into and he liked what I played. We just kept doing it.

MetalHeadRadio:
What is your music background?

Masaki: I listen to pretty much everything except rap and R&B. Metal has all different kinds of musical elements and is the most diverse genre.

Travis: I started playing percussion in 5th grade and drum set in 8th grade (age 14). I played in jazz band and played heavy metal at home. I did one band in highschool that didn't go anywhere.

Jack: I've been playing electric guitar since I was 7 years old. I've been writing music since I was about 12 and listen to all styles of metal as well as some rock. My favorite genres are Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Melodic Death Metal, and Folk/Power Metal.

Sunao: I like so many genres of music, even hip hop, jazz, blues and many others. All music out there inspires me in some way.

MetalHeadRadio:
Who are your musical influences?

Masaki: 80s old school thrash mainly, I think.
Travis: I started listening to thrash in my early teens and went on to heavier things like death and black metal. Death metal and black metal influence me but not as much as thrash because it was what I started listening to when I started playing drums. I like allot of drummers including Dave Lombardo and Gene Hogland

Jack: Jari from Wintersun. Dan Swano, Paul Gilbert, Michael Romeo and many other guitarist inspire me. Some of the many bands that are influential to me are Kalmah, Symphony X, Wintersun, Metallica, Death, and Stormlord.

Sunao: There's so many bands that influenced me, it's hard to say. I'm not trying to be anybody but I play my style.

MetalHeadRadio:
What are your immediate music career goals? (Next year or so)

Masaki: Get signed. Have a full-length out.

Travis: Yeah! And tour!

Jack: Tour, Write, Record, and hopefully make some money from all of it.

Sunao: Tour world wide!!

MetalHeadRadio:
Who handles your daily business activities? (Bookings, promotions etc.)

Masaki: Everybody does different things. I take care a lot of promotions and Travis takes care bookings and contacting people.

Travis: Yeah, we try to split duties evenly, but allot of times it depends on each person's availability.

MetalHeadRadio:
Do you have a record label? Are you a member of any music organizations?

Masaki: No.

Jack: Not Yet. Hopefully soon.

Here is a Video by Hemoptysis that was chosen to play in the May 2009 MHRTV Showcase!

MetalHeadRadio:
Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues?
Do you have any upcoming shows?

Masaki: We have only played in the Phoenix area so far, but I like playing at Joe's Grotto and Club Red. They have good sound systems and engineers. Also, The Sets would be a great one if they improve the sound. We have a show with Back From Ashes on Saturday, April 25th at Joe's Grotto and after that, Saturday June 6th at UB's bar with Warbringer and Avenger of Blood.

Travis: I agree with what Masaki said about favorite venues. I'd rather not say my least favorite venue because I don't want to start a fued but I definitely have one in mind. I'm sure we are all thinking of the same one.

Jack: We've gotten to play The Sets which is my favorite local venue. Unfortunately, we've had to play some horrible venues which I will keep unnamed.

MetalHeadRadio:
Where would the "ultimate" venue for you to play be?

Masaki: There are so many of them. It's not a venue, but it would be a dream come true if we could have opportunities one day to play at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, Download Fest in England, and Loud Park In Japan.

Travis: Budakan in Japan and Monsters of rock in Moscow.

Jack: Wacken Open air would be amazing to play. I just want to play festivals with many different types of metal bands.

Sunao: I wanna play at every venue!!

MetalHeadRadio:
Which songs do you perform most frequently?
Do you ever play any covers?

Masaki: Probablly And The World Dies and Shadow of Death. I don't think we have taken these songs out from our set list so far. We don't play cover songs and I'm not a big fan of playing cover songs unless there are reasons or it's arranged and unique. I'm sick of seeing and hearing so many bands playing "Raining Blood."

Travis: I think our latest new song, Merchant of Death, will be in our regular rotation for a long time.

Jack: Shadow of Death seems to be our most popular song so we will be playing that at the majority of our shows. Our new tune, Merchant Of Death, will be played a lot as well since the crowd reacts very well to it every night we play it.

MetalHeadRadio:
Who writes your songs?
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
Who comes up with the most song ideas?

Masaki: On the "Who Needs A Shepherd" EP, I wrote all the music. Travis, former singer Anthony and I worked together on lyrics.

Travis: Currently Masaki still comes up with the basics of each song, Jack dresses things up a bit with his leads and other ideas and Masaki and I share lyric writing duties. The themes of our songs vary allot. There are songs about killing, revenge, anti-christian themes, fear, anti-Iraq war, anti-George W Bush, and stuff like that.

Jack: Masaki and I generally structure the songs but all 4 of us write individual parts for ourselves and we discuss the song as a group when we write.

MetalHeadRadio:
What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in
which you practice or are rehearsals more spontaneous?

Masaki is warming up
Travis is ready to record his drum track!
Ren

Masaki: we rehearse three times a week.

Travis: Tuesday, Thursday, & Saturday (unless we have a gig) at 7:30PM

MetalHeadRadio:
How has your music evolved since first began playing together?

Masaki: Obviously, we all got better and gained experience. This is huge! Especially since we got Jack; he brought us a new wind . He spices up the new songs we have been working on.

Jack: I've gotten much better at playing live since I am now having many opportunities to do this. I feel that we're all improving our songwriting skills as well.

Sunao: Some of us had no experience playing gigs before Hemoptysis, and all the members have improved their live performance and stuff.

MetalHeadRadio:
What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Masaki: Don't give up!

Travis: It's expensive. You'll be poor. You'll deal with tons of flakes and lineup changes. It's all worth it in the end when you get to play shows and record your ideas.

Jack: Don't be afraid to compromise a little. Playing music that's not your passion, but still fun to you, is definitely more favorable to having a very hard time finding musicians to play all of your own material. Remember that you can always write your own music on your free time.

Sunao: You never know until you try it, so just do it if you want to.

MetalHeadRadio:
What is the name of your most current CD?
Where can it be purchased?

Cover art of the forthcoming EP Who Needs A Shepherd?

Masaki: "Who Needs A Shepherd?" EP. It is available at all Zia Records stores in Arizona and Nevada. It's also available on CDbaby, iTunes, Amazon and many other online music stores.
